Titian Lestari Foundation is an independent non-profit organization, whose function is to encourage natural resource management that ensures the sustainability of ecosystems to support livelihood resources with the community, the private sector, and the government through best natural resource management practices and community empowerment. Titian’s mission is to conduct studies and development of concepts and practices in natural resource management that ensure the sustainability of ecosystems to support livelihoods, strengthening the community, especially vulnerable groups in the management of natural resources, which ensures the sustainability of ecosystems to support their livelihoods, and encouraging law enforcement and improving policies in the management of natural resources in Indonesia to achieve good natural resource governance. Titian has a lot of experience and commitment in supporting livelihood through ecosystem sustainability programs, encouraging data and information-driven innovations in natural resource management including policy advocacy. Among these programs developed is community-based forest monitoring in Kalimantan to support policymaking, law enforcement, and the changing of practices on natural resources management in both community and private sectors. In every monitoring that we do, we always involve the local community (forest farmer group, farmer women group, young people) and the government to make connections and communications, also increasing awareness and capacity building.

Vision

The main goal of Titian Lestari Foundation is the study and development of biological sciences with a focus on raising awareness and empowering communities. We aim to achieve wise and equitable natural resource management to ensure its sustainability through transparent and participatory means.

History

Founded in 1997 by a group of students from the Faculty of Biology at the National University of Jakarta, Titian Lestari Foundation initially engaged in biological resource research activities in West Kalimantan. The organization is a legal entity in the form of a foundation, established and domiciled in Jakarta through a notarial deed. In 2008, Titian established a new organization named Titian Institution, as a continuation of the previously formed Titian Foundation. Titian Institution continues to be run by successors of the original Titian founders. Subsequently, on September 16, 2015, Titian Lestari Foundation was officially established and headquartered in Pontianak City.

Experience and collaboration

Titian has been participated in and contributed to advocate the establishment of Government Regulations No. 7 & 8 Year 1999 on the preservation, protection and utilization of wild fauna and flora (1998-1999); decreasing illegal logging and wildlife crime and its associate trades practices in national and West Kalimantan mainly in Sambas, Bengkayang, Kapuas Hulu, Sintang and Ketapang Districts in collaboration with law enforcement institutions (funded by EU-ILRC, TRAFFIC TSEA, UK-DFID, USAID-OCSP, TFCA; 2003 to present); involve in the establishment of Indonesian Independent Forest Monitoring Network (MFP; 2009-2010), facilitate local community groups in West Kalimantan in obtaining social forestry licenses through Village Forest scheme in Sintang and Ketapang Districts (FFI and WWF; 2011-2014). Titian had initiated several multi-stakeholder forums and networks to address specific issues and become a founder organization in establishing Indonesia Wildlife Monitoring network in 1997 that succeeded to set up a nation-wide wildlife trade monitoring network and advocate the need of strong policy on National Biodiversity inventory and monitoring system. In West Kalimantan, Titian had initiated and established Konsorsium Anti Illegal Logging (KAIL) in 2001 that work hand in hand with provincial government, Ministry of Forestry, National and Provincial Police (Bareskrim and POLDA Kalbar) and Kejaksaan both in National and Provincial level to address massive illegal logging and forest crime activity. In 2007 Titian and FFI-IP, had initiate Social Forestry programming West Kalimantan with few other NGOs such as Gemawan, PPSDAK, KABAN and Riak Bumi to encouraging local communities on sustainable forest management and success to secure five hutan desa license from Ministry of Forestry in 2010. Since early 2019, TITIAN has also been working in East Kalimantan which focuses on ecosystem rehabilitation, biodiversity conservation, and community livelihood in social forestry groups. Actively contribute to the sustainability rehabilitation of ecosystem by reducing the vulnerability of local communities to the effect of climate change through four main actions: 1) rehabilitation and protection of ecosystem; 2) conservation of key species living in ecosystem; 3) improvement of aquaculture practices and development of livelihood alternative for local community; 4) raising awareness of local community on the importance of ecosystem.

Founder and Project Implementer

The funding sources originating from independent supporters, funding institutions, contributions from parties that are not binding and are not involved in environmental destruction, human rights violations, corruption and money laundering. ​​The organizational size and technical capacity of Titian, have four founders. Two founders of Titian are Mr. Drs. Imran Said Lumbang Tobing, M.Si and Mr. Dr. Tatang Mitra Setia, M.Si who is a lecturer in Nasional University, Jakarta. Another founder in Titian is Mr. Darmawan Liswanto, now an active board member of Titian and professional consultant for international and national NGOs. Also Mr. Hariyo Tabah Wicaksono, now as a Director of Sintas Indonesia, Bogor. The supervisor of Titian management is Mr. Yuyun Kurniawan. S.Hut. M.Ling whose concern is community based forest management, Mrs. Ade Yuliani, S.Hut, MA, LCPC is a leadership coach and advisor for institutional and community development specialist, Mr. Iis Sabahudin S.Hut, MSi is socio anthropologist specialist. The executive management team for Titian are Mr. S. Martinus Gilang (Director); Mrs. Narita Isti (Finance Manager); and Mrs. Irma Heriyanti (Secretary) while the operational team are Mr. Edy Gustriansyah, S.Pd., M.Pd (Project Manager); Mr. Indra (Communication Specialist); Mr. Glory Atsen (GIS Specialist); Mrs. Flora Milenia, S.Hut (Community Development); Sanggara Wilka Ully (Project Finance); Mr. Fajrur (Provincial Coordinator); Mr. Adri Amiruddin, S.Pd, M.Sos (Community Development Specialist).
