Banyan Tree Global Foundation (BTGF) and Titian are conducting mangrove rehabilitation using eco-friendly polybags.

Titian encourages the productive economic efforts of women in the Muara Jawa district who have expertise in making woven crafts. Webbing is made from natural materials that are very abundant in the Mahakam Delta, namely Nipah.

In general, the mahakam delta community uses Nipah leaves into roofs and lidi Nipah that have even been exported to India and other countries. However, the use of Nipah leaves itself has not been widely used by the Mahakam Delta community itself.

In the Mahakam Delta, mangrove rehabilitation activities are often carried out. Instead of re-vegetation natural conditions, often these activities cause plastic waste from polybags used as mangrove seed containers. This concern is what makes Titian have the innovation to make eco-polybags from Nipah leaves by involving women in Muara Jawa who are already experts in weeding.

In July 2021, the women group made 7500 eco-polybags used for seedling 7500 mangrove seeds with a total of 6 types of mangroves. 6 months later (January 2022), the seeds were planted in several community ponds in Muara Ulu Besar Orchard.

The condition of the eco-polybag is still in very good condition, sturdy, and does not change shape only the color is already black filled with mud. This proves that eco-polybags are able to replace plastic polybags commonly used for mangrove seedlings. With this mangrove rehabilitation activities will not leave any non-organic waste.
