“Eco-polybag” A New Alternative Livehood for Local Community in Mangrove Ecosystem

Polybag is one important part in the nursery. It accommodates planting media to allow the prospective plant to live and developed until it is ready to be planted. However, polybag that is usually made from Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE) would potentially bring a problem and jeopardize our environment due to its non-degradable nature. To reduce the use of polybags that have the potential to create new problems for the environment, Titian Lestari Foundation invites people to switch to using environmentally friendly polybags (eco-polybag). This eco-polybag made from nature, which is the main constituent of the ecosystem in Delta Mahakam, that is Nipah Tree (Nypa frutica). Another benefit of using eco-polybag, it could create an alternative livelihood for local community particularly those who involved in nursery and planting activities.

This initiative gained positive respond from village leader of Muara Kembang. Mr. Muhammad Ramli and his staff. “It could potentially be a new alternative livelihood for local community of Muara Kembang Village” said Mr. Ramli when Titian Lestari Foundation shows the eco-polybag produced by community in his office on 28 April 2021.
